Chevening Scholarships 2027: Timeline, Essays and Interview Guide
Chevening 2027/28 applications close by 20 October 2026 in most countries. Full timeline, the four essays explained, work-experience rules and interview preparation.

If you want a fully funded one-year master's in the UK and you can demonstrate leadership potential, Chevening remains the single biggest prize: full tuition, a monthly living allowance, flights, and entry into one of the most influential alumni networks in the world. It is funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, it awards thousands of scholarships each year across more than 150 countries, and the current application window closes in October 2026 for study starting in autumn 2027.
The clock is the first hurdle
Chevening no longer runs one global deadline. Each country page sets its own cut-off, and most fall between 7 and 20 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC — several countries have already closed. If you are reading this in October, treat your country page as the only source of truth and check it today. After closing, the sift runs against eligibility criteria from late October, independent reading committees score applications between mid-October and January, shortlists are announced around mid-February 2027, and interviews take place at British embassies and high commissions between March and April. Results land from mid-June, and you must have at least one unconditional UK course offer submitted by 8 July 2027, 17:00 BST.

Eligibility: the two years nobody reads carefully
The requirement that eliminates the most applicants is work experience: 2,800 hours, equivalent to about two years of full-time work, accumulated before you apply. It does not need to be graduate-level or continuous — internships, part-time roles, voluntary work and family business experience all count, provided you can evidence them. Beyond that you need an undergraduate degree, citizenship of a Chevening-eligible country, and a commitment to return home for at least two years after the award. You apply to three different UK master's courses as part of the application, but you do not need offers in hand until the July deadline.
The four essays, decoded
The written application centres on four essays, each capped at roughly 500 words, and committees read thousands of them. Write them like evidence, not like motivation:
- Leadership and influence. Pick one or two concrete situations where you changed an outcome — a project you rescued, a policy you shifted, a team you built. Numbers and named specifics beat adjectives every time.
- Networking. Chevening is obsessed with networks by design. Show real relationships you have built and used, and how they produced a result — not a list of conferences attended.
- Studying in the UK. Name the three courses and justify each: which modules, which supervisors, why the UK rather than home. Generic praise for "world-class British education" is the fastest way to be forgotten.
- Career plan. Be specific about the next five years after you return home — the sector, the kind of role, the problem you intend to work on. Vague ambition reads as risk.
- Fully Funded 1+1 MBA Scholarship at University of Oxford (Pershing Square), UK 2027 — the Pershing Square 1+1 MBA scholarship. Deadline: 6 January 2027 (1+1 MBA application deadline).
Two references are submitted only if you reach the interview stage, so your essays carry the entire pre-shortlist case. Our breakdown of why scholarship applications get rejected covers the failure patterns committees see most often.
The interview
Shortlisted candidates face a panel at their local British embassy or high commission, usually 25 to 40 minutes. Expect questions that pressure-test your essays: real examples behind your leadership claims, how your networking actually produced results, why your three course choices, and how you will use the degree at home. Panels can probe gaps or inconsistencies, so know your own application cold. All documentation — photo ID, degree certificates, references — must be uploaded at least seven working days before the interview.
What it covers, and what it does not
The award pays full tuition for a one-year taught master's (with a tuition cap that excludes most MBA-style programmes), a monthly living stipend at London-appropriate rates, economy return flights, an arrival allowance and visa costs. What it does not do is fund a second year, fund research programmes like a PhD, or pay for dependants to accompany you. If your goal is doctoral study, compare it with our UK PhD funding guide — the structures are completely different.
One last practical note: Chevening requires you to meet your course's English requirements, but it does not mandate IELTS specifically. If a test is the obstacle, our guide to UK universities that accept MOI certificates shows how applicants keep the October window without waiting for a test date.
Common application mistakes that cost interviews
Chevening's own guidance and post-selection debriefs point at the same failure patterns each year. First, applying without checking the country page — applicants who assume a global November deadline miss windows that close in early October, and the system does not reopen. Second, recycling a personal statement into the leadership essay: the committees are not scoring ambition, they are scoring evidenced influence, and a CV in paragraph form scores poorly. Third, choosing three courses at one university or three courses in the same city for convenience — the scheme wants deliberate, researched choices across your field, and identical choices read as autopilot. Fourth, vague career plans that could apply to anyone; a plan anchored to a named institution, sector or policy problem in your home country is worth more than eloquence.
Budget your writing time realistically: four essays at up to 500 words each, revised over at least two weeks, beats four essays written the night your country's window closes. And keep your evidence trail — roles, dates, hours — consistent with the work-experience section, because the sift checks arithmetic, and 2,800 hours means 2,800 documented hours.
