Stipendium Hungaricum 2027: 5,000+ Scholarships, One January Deadline
Hungary’s Stipendium Hungaricum closes on 15 January 2027 — what it pays and how selection works.
Hungary’s flagship scholarship runs one of the largest government-funded programmes in Europe: 5,000-plus new Stipendium Hungaricum awards every year, students from 100-plus partner countries, and a single application window that opens around 17 November 2026 and closes on 15 January 2027 (2 p.m. CET) for the 2027/28 academic year. Because the window is short and the document list long, the applicants who win tend to be the ones who started in November, not January.
What the scholarship pays
The package is genuinely full, though the cash component is modest by Western European standards — Hungarian living costs are too. Tuition is covered in full at the host university, students receive a monthly stipend of HUF 43,700 at bachelor’s and master’s level (roughly €110), doctoral candidates receive HUF 140,000-plus per month, and everyone gets a dormitory place or a HUF 40,000 monthly housing contribution plus health insurance. Airfare is not covered — one of the few gaps. A supplementary health insurance scheme of up to about HUF 65,000 a year sits on top of the basic public cover.
| What Stipendium Hungaricum covers | Detail |
|---|---|
| Tuition | Covered in full at the host university |
| Stipend | HUF 43,700/month (BA/MA, roughly €110); HUF 140,000+/month (PhD) |
| Housing | Dormitory place or HUF 40,000/month housing contribution |
| Health insurance | Public cover plus supplementary scheme up to ~HUF 65,000/year |
| Airfare | Not covered - one of the few gaps |
| Deadline | 15 January 2027, 2 p.m. CET (window opens ~17 November 2026) |
| Work rights | Up to 24 hours/week during term on a residence permit for studies |
Treat the numbers as what they are: this is not a stipend you save from, it is a package that removes tuition and housing — the two costs that actually block students — while Budapest’s cheap transport and food do the rest.
Who can apply
Citizens of Hungary’s 100-plus partner countries apply through their sending partner, and the list spans every continent — from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Nigeria to China, Vietnam, Brazil and Egypt. There is no universal age limit; individual programmes set their own academic requirements. English-taught programmes typically ask for IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 72 or the equivalent, though requirements vary by host university, and Hungarian-taught tracks include a language preparation year instead.
The document list is the part that catches people out: certified transcripts and degree certificates, a medical certificate filled in by a doctor, a copy of your passport, a motivation letter, and two recommendation letters — which means your referees need two months’ notice, not two days.
How selection works
- Application (Nov-Jan). You apply both in the Tempus portal and, for most countries, to your national sending partner — missing the second step is the classic fatal error.
- Nomination. Sending partners and host universities screen applications; host universities score academic files and can interview.
- Results (from late spring). Offers arrive by email with a deadline to accept; placements begin September 2027.
Competition is real but reasonable: with 5,000-plus awards spread across all levels and hundreds of programmes, odds beat any comparably funded Western European scheme. Bachelor’s, master’s and PhD tracks all run — PhD stipends at HUF 140,000-plus make doctoral applications the best value per month, while master’s applicants face the largest programme choice.
What Budapest budgets actually look like
The stipend stops looking small once you price Hungarian life. A dormitory bed or a shared flat outside the centre runs HUF 90,000-150,000 a month; a weekly market-and-Lidl shop keeps food near HUF 60,000-80,000; the Budapest pass for unlimited transport costs about HUF 8,000 a month for students. Even without touching the housing contribution, the standard package clears a modest student budget — which is precisely how the programme positions itself: tuition and housing removed, living costs manageable. Students who prefer private studios in central Budapest pay the difference themselves, so the dorm option is worth taking in year one while you learn the city.
Work rules add flexibility: international students on a residence permit for studies may work up to 24 hours a week during term, and Budapest’s shared-service and tech sectors hire English-speaking students year-round. After graduation, a residence permit for job searching gives you months to convert the degree into Hungarian or EU employment — a quieter but real part of the programme’s pitch.
Strategy for a strong file
- Order documents now. Certified translations, apostilles and the medical certificate all have lead times; recommendation letters need referee calendars, which fill in December.
- Pick programmes, not universities. You apply to specific study programmes at specific Hungarian universities — ranking three well-matched programmes beats three aspirational ones.
- Write the motivation letter to the programme. Generic letters read as generic; name modules, labs and supervisors you would join.
- Stack parallel applications. The January deadline sits inside the Erasmus Mundus window — our EMJM calendar shows how both cycles share the same document pile, and the twelve rejection reasons explains what sinks files like this one.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the Stipendium Hungaricum 2027 deadline?
The application window for the 2027/28 academic year runs from November 2026 to mid-January 2027 (historically 15 January), with one deadline for the entire system. Nominations by your national partner authority precede this, so check with your ministry or sending partner in October — some countries close internal selection by December.
What does Stipendium Hungaricum cover?
The scholarship covers full tuition, a dormitory place or a housing contribution (HUF 40,000 per month in 2026-2027), health insurance and a small annual allowance — but note it does not include a general monthly stipend for most awardees. Living costs in Budapest or Debrecen run €400-600 per month, so plan part-time work (20 hours weekly allowed) or savings.
How competitive is Stipendium Hungaricum?
Around 5,000 scholarships are awarded each year across roughly 80 partner countries; success rates vary from under 10% in large applicant pools (Pakistan, Nigeria, Egypt) to well over 30% where national quotas are underfilled. Programme choice matters most: applied sciences and regional campuses convert at several times the rate of Budapest law or medicine.
