IELTS, TOEFL or PTE for a UK PhD: Check Acceptance Before Booking

Check the exact course and university before choosing an English test. Accepted tests, score thresholds, delivery modes and visa evidence can differ, even between programmes in the same country.

Fees, scores and speed in 2026

All three tests are accepted across the UK, but they differ in price, scoring and turnaround. In the UK, IELTS Academic typically costs £215–£250, TOEFL iBT is priced at $270 for UK test-takers, PTE Academic sits in a similar band, and the Duolingo English Test — accepted by a growing list of UK universities — is a flat $70 worldwide. Score scales are not interchangeable: IELTS bands run 1–9, TOEFL totals 0–120 and PTE 10–90, so always quote your score with its scale.

Speed matters when deadlines are close. PTE reports typically within two business days and Duolingo within about two days, while computer-based IELTS returns results in one to two days and paper-based in around thirteen. Results are valid for two years for all three main tests. For UK PhD applicants the common ask is IELTS 6.5–7.0 overall; the chart maps that requirement across the three scales using published concordance.

Choosing by your own weak skill

Match the test format to how you actually perform. IELTS speaking is a live conversation with an examiner - strong for candidates who think aloud, uncomfortable for those who rehearse scripts. TOEFL iBT speaking is recorded responses to prompts, four in a row, which rewards prepared structure and penalises slow starts. PTE blends speaking and writing into computer-scored tasks with strictly timed formats, which suits practised candidates but can feel mechanical. Reading and listening differ less between the three; the speaking format is the real fork in the road.

Practical sequencing saves money. Sit one free or cheap mock for each candidate test - Duolingo offers a free practice test online, and all three big providers publish sample papers - then book only the format where your mock clears the requirement with margin. Build a retake buffer of at least six weeks before application deadlines, because the two-year validity clock starts at the test date, not the admission date, and a result that expires mid-application forces an expensive re-sit.

Short answer: start with your university’s accepted-test list

There is no universally best English test for UK doctoral admissions. Acceptance, section scores, test delivery mode and visa evidence rules depend on your course and sponsor. Before booking, check your specific 2027 PhD page and whether your sponsor can assess English independently for the Student visa. GOV.UK notes that higher education providers can assess English for degree-level study at the required CEFR B2 equivalent.

Important TOEFL change for 2027

ETS introduced TOEFL iBT reporting on a 1–6 scale on 21 January 2026. During the transition it also provides a comparable 0–120 overall score. Old statements such as “TOEFL 100 is always equivalent to IELTS 7” should not replace the institution’s actual 2027 requirements. See ETS’s official score-scale explanation.

Academic admission versus UK visa English proof

University admission and immigration compliance are related but not identical. At degree level, eligible UK higher education providers may make their own English assessment. If you are specifically instructed to supply a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT), book the approved version rather than assuming any academic test will do. See GOV.UK English evidence guidance and IELTS UKVI guidance.

A practical five-question decision process

  1. Which tests and delivery modes does my exact PhD programme accept?
  2. What overall and individual-component scores are required?
  3. Does the funding award impose another threshold?
  4. Do I need a UKVI-approved SELT or will my sponsoring university assess English?
  5. Which acceptable test has an accessible date, price and preparation format for me?

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every UK university accepts every test.
  • Booking IELTS General Training for an Academic requirement.
  • Ignoring minimum sub-scores in writing or speaking.
  • Using a general conversion chart instead of the admissions page.
  • Assuming an English-medium degree automatically gives a waiver.
  • Booking a test version not approved for the immigration situation.

Frequently asked questions

Is IELTS mandatory for UK PhD applications?

Not universally. Other qualifications and tests may be accepted, but policies differ by institution and sponsor.

Which test is easiest?

Difficulty depends on your language strengths and test format; no credible universal ranking is possible.

Can I use TOEFL for a UK Student visa?

A university may use TOEFL as evidence in its degree-level English assessment where permitted. That is different from treating ordinary TOEFL as a government-approved SELT.

Check four details before booking

Create a short note for each course: the accepted test version, overall score, minimum component scores and validity period. Also record whether an online or at-home format is accepted. If the page uses an older TOEFL scale, ask admissions which requirement applies to your test date. Avoid relying on a general comparison chart for an application decision. Choose among accepted options using available dates, costs and your familiarity with the format. A test that suits your preparation is useful only if the institution accepts the exact version you intend to take.

Compare the accepted version before comparing scores

IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic are different products, and a university can specify which versions or delivery modes it accepts. Check the exact list for your doctoral course. Do not assume an at-home result, a retake option or a UKVI-labelled version is interchangeable with every other version of the same brand.

Make a shortlist of accepted tests across all the programmes you would realistically apply to. If one test is accepted everywhere, it may simplify reporting. If acceptance differs, decide whether the additional programme justifies another test rather than booking first and checking later.

A booking checklist

DetailWhat to record before paying
Overall thresholdThe course's actual minimum for the accepted test.
Section thresholdsRequired reading, writing, listening and speaking scores.
ValidityHow old the result may be at the relevant application or course date.
Delivery modeAccepted centre-based, online or other specified version.
ReportingHow the official result must reach the institution.

ETS introduced a new one-to-six TOEFL iBT scale in half-point increments from 21 January 2026. Read the institution's current requirements for tests taken after that date. A conversion chart is not a substitute for a university's stated threshold, and score-format changes do not establish that every institution has adopted the same policy.

Choose a format you can prepare for

After establishing acceptance, use official sample tasks to understand each test. Consider the speaking format, typing requirements, available centres, access arrangements and the time needed for reporting. Compare the actual booking costs for your location rather than an undated price table. A test that appears cheaper can become less convenient if it requires travel or a second attempt.

Set a preparation plan around your weakest assessed skills. General confidence in English does not tell you whether you can complete the required tasks within the test format. Equally, a high practice score does not guarantee the official result. Leave time for the reporting process and any next step permitted by the programme.

Is PTE accepted by every UK university for a PhD?

No universal acceptance rule applies. Check the institution and course list before booking.

Can I combine section scores from different attempts?

Only where the institution's current policy allows the particular reporting or retake arrangement. Do not construct your own combined result from separate certificates.

Questions applicants often ask

Which English test is cheapest for UK PhD applications?

The Duolingo English Test at a flat $70 — but only where your university accepts it. Among the big three, PTE and TOEFL often undercut IELTS, and IELTS for UKVI costs more than the standard Academic test, which is what most universities actually require.

What is IELTS 7.0 in TOEFL and PTE?

Published concordance maps IELTS 7.0 to roughly TOEFL 94–101 and PTE 66. Duolingo 130–135 is the commonly accepted equivalent. Always check the specific requirement your department publishes.
