Project Overview
About the Scholarship
The Eiffel scholarship is the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs' flagship instrument for attracting top international students to French higher education. It exists at two levels - master's and doctoral - and it is deliberately run through institutions: French universities and grandes écoles nominate the candidates they most want to keep. That design detail shapes everything about how you apply, because there is no direct application to Campus France.
At doctoral level the scholarship funds up to 36 months of thesis work in France; at master's level it funds M1-plus-M2 tracks up to 24 months (or 12 months where the institution nominates only the final M2 year). The programme covers four disciplinary clusters: science and technology, economics and management, law and political science, and - at master's level only - a limited set of other fields.
What the Scholarship Pays
| Component | Details |
|---|---|
| Master's allowance | €1,181 per month, paid on top of direct services such as transport and cultural activities. |
| Doctoral allowance | €1,700 per month. |
| Travel | International return journey covered, plus an allowance for the first installation period. |
| Insurance | Health insurance cover under the French student scheme and personal liability cover. |
| Not included | Tuition fees are not paid by the Eiffel programme itself - many institutions waive or reduce fees for their Eiffel laureates, but that is decided by the host institution. |
Eligibility and Requirements
| Criterion | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Nationality | Foreign (non-French) nationals; candidates with dual French citizenship are excluded. |
| Age - master's | Up to 29 years old under the limits published on the official programme page. |
| Age - PhD | Up to 35 years old. |
| Route | Only applications submitted by French higher education institutions are accepted; candidates cannot apply to Campus France directly. |
| Prior attempts | A candidate previously refused at master's level may reapply at doctoral level; laureates cannot receive a second Eiffel at the same level. |
Application Timeline
| Stage | Details |
|---|---|
| Your move first | Apply for admission to a French master's or doctoral programme in autumn 2026 and ask the institution to nominate you for Eiffel. |
| Institution deadline | Each institution sets its internal deadline well before the national cut-off - ask your contact at the university early. |
| Institution submission | French institutions submit nominated files to Campus France by 6 January 2027. |
| Results | The previous campaign published results from late March onwards; expect a similar window for 2027. |
How to Approach the Application
Because the institution does the nominating, your real task is to convince a French department that you are worth their nomination slot, not to fill in a scholarship form. That means a strong admission file - grades, a focused study or research plan, and reference letters - plus an early conversation with the programme coordinator about Eiffel nomination. Candidates who contact departments between October and early December have the best chance of being considered, since institutions cap the number of files they forward.
