About FIBE3

FIBE3 stands for Future Infrastructure and Built Environment: Unlocking Net Zero. It is an EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training based at the University of Cambridge. The programme aims to train researchers capable of addressing infrastructure challenges associated with the transition towards net zero. The programme combines a one-year Master of Research with a three-year PhD.

Four Main Research Themes

FIBE3 research is organised around four broad themes: current and disruptive technologies; circularity and whole-life approaches; AI-driven digitalisation and data; and risk-based systems thinking and connectivity. Students work closely with academic researchers and industrial partners.

Programme Structure

Year 1 – MRes: During the first year, students develop interdisciplinary knowledge of infrastructure; net-zero research skills; technical training; research methods; professional skills; and a detailed PhD research plan. Years 2–4 – PhD: The following three years focus on the student's doctoral research project. Projects involve academic supervision and industry collaboration and are expected to align with the FIBE3 research roadmap.

Funding

The University states that EPSRC FIBE3 studentships provide tuition-fee funding and maintenance support for eligible Home students. International applicants can apply, but the situation is significantly more competitive. The CDT states that a very small number of outstanding international applicants may receive support at a later stage in recruitment. Where such funding is awarded, the CDT may cover Home-rate tuition fees, stipend, and potentially an international-fee shortfall through additional University support. International funding should therefore not be considered guaranteed.

Academic Requirements

Applicants are generally expected to have a high UK 2:1 or First-Class degree, or an equivalent international qualification. Relevant academic backgrounds can include: civil engineering; mechanical engineering; chemical engineering; manufacturing engineering; electrical engineering; information engineering; materials science; environmental science; earth science; computer science; mathematics; chemistry; architecture; project management; and other related disciplines. Applicants must normally have completed at least a three-year undergraduate degree.

Application Routes

General Application: Applicants can propose their own research direction and explain how it aligns with FIBE3 themes. They should identify relevant academic supervisors and potential industry partners. Project-Specific Application: Applicants can apply for one of the advertised FIBE3 projects where a supervisor and industry partner are already identified. A research proposal is still expected even for project-specific applications.

Deadline

The current Cambridge FIBE3 page states: 14 April 2027. Applications may close sooner if all places are filled.

2026/27 UKRI reference rate: the minimum UKRI doctoral stipend is £21,805 per year, tax-free (London institutions +£2,000), effective 1 October 2026.
