Fully Funded PhD Position in Structural Biology of Eukaryotic Translation Control at CEITEC MU

Project Overview

About the Position

We are inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position in Petr Tesina's Research Group at CEITEC (Central European Institute of Technology), Masaryk University in Brno, Czechia — a leading European centre for life sciences with state-of-the-art research infrastructure. The PhD project centers on a fundamental question in molecular biology: How is human translation controlled at the structural level?

Research Focus

You will investigate the structures of ribosomal complexes involved in eukaryotic translation control, at the interface of structural biology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. The lab has recently secured substantial third-party funding — including an ERC Starting Grant and an EMBO Installation Grant — so your research and training will be well supported for years to come.

Training and Skills

  • Access to state-of-the-art cryo-EM instruments at our local core facility.
  • Comprehensive cryo-EM training provided — no prior cryo-EM experience required.
  • Hands-on experience with advanced techniques including CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, protein and RNA biochemistry, and biophysics methods.
  • Soft skills development in scientific communication, collaboration, and project management.

Funding and Benefits

  • Competitive ERC-funded salary starting at 30,000 CZK net, with yearly increase.
  • 6 weeks of paid holiday.
  • Medical insurance.
  • Meal and pension contributions.
  • Multisport card.

  • Sports lessons directly on campus.
  • Kindergarten close to the campus.
  • Welcome Office support with visa and relocation assistance.
  • Flexible working hours.

Eligibility and Requirements

  • Must-have: MSc or equivalent degree (preferably in Life Sciences), strong interest in structural biology, strong spoken and written English.
  • Nice-to-have: Hands-on experience with structural biology, biochemistry, or molecular biology methods; programming skills; experience with human or yeast cell cultures.
  • A background in structural biology and translation is the ultimate fit — but above all, we value curiosity, dedication, and a collaborative mindset.

Application Process

Submit your CV, motivation letter, list of publications, and contacts for at least two references via the e-application portal. Applications are open until 8 January 2027, but apply as soon as possible, as this is a rolling review and candidates are assessed in the order applications are received.
