PhD in Advanced Epitaxial Growth for InP-Based Photonic Integrated Circuits - Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Netherlands

Project Overview

About the Position

Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) invites applications for a PhD position on advanced epitaxial growth for indium-phosphide (InP) based photonic integrated circuits. The doctoral project works with a state-of-the-art Aixtron epitaxy reactor to grow InP, InGaAsP and InAlGaAs heterostructures that form the active building blocks of integrated photonic devices. The research connects crystal-growth physics with device performance, supporting the scale-up of InP photonics for datacom, sensing and next-generation optical technologies.

The position is a salaried four-year doctoral appointment under the Dutch CAO-NU collective agreement, embedded in TU/e's photonics integration research environment, one of Europe's leading groups in integrated photonic circuits. The doctoral candidate will plan and run epitaxial growth experiments, characterise layers with high-resolution structural and optical techniques, and feed results back into growth optimisation together with device-oriented colleagues and industrial partners.

Candidate Profile

Applicants hold a master's degree in materials science, chemical engineering, physics or electrical engineering, with a strong interest in semiconductor growth and characterisation. Hands-on or theoretical experience with MOVPE/epitaxy, cleanroom work or semiconductor characterisation is an advantage. Applications are submitted through TU/e's Varbi recruitment system with a CV, transcripts, references and a motivation letter; shortlisted candidates are interviewed before the appointment decision.
