Project Overview
About the Position
Radboud University invites applications for a PhD position on Decolonising Reparations, part of an NWO-funded research project. The project works with Indo and Indonesian communities to critically examine histories of colonial violence and the politics of repair, using participatory and creative methods to explore what reparations can mean beyond financial settlements - including acknowledgement, memory, restitution and institutional change. The doctoral candidate will co-develop research with community partners and contribute to academic and public-facing outputs.
The position is a salaried four-year doctoral appointment under the Dutch CAO-NU collective agreement at Radboud University's Faculty of Social Sciences or a closely aligned faculty, depending on the final project framing. The doctoral candidate will conduct qualitative and archival research, participate in community-engaged workshops, and work in a supervisory team spanning social science and humanities perspectives. The project explicitly values collaborative, ethically grounded research practice.
Candidate Profile
Applicants hold a research master's degree in anthropology, sociology, history or a related social-science or humanities field, with an interest in colonial history, decolonial theory and community-based participatory research. Experience with qualitative methods and sensitivity to working with communities affected by colonial violence are important. Applications are submitted through Radboud University's recruitment system with a CV, transcripts, references and a motivation letter describing the candidate's affinity with the project.
