Project Overview
About the Position
The University of Basel's Swiss Nanoscience Institute invites applications for a PhD position within the PhD programme in Nanoscience. The project, "Rationally Engineered Hydrogels to Control Osteogenesis via Mechanoregulation" (P2603), is supervised by Dr. Géraldine Guex (UZB), Prof. Zarah Walsh-Korb, and Prof. David Brückner.
The research aims to engineer environmentally (cell)-instructive hydrogels with controlled architecture (pore size, network interconnectivity) and mechanical properties (viscoelasticity) to recapitulate the mechanical micro-environment of the jawbone.
Research Position Overview
Mechanosensitive complexes within the hydrogel form stimuli-responsive cross-links that adjust hydrogel viscoelasticity as a function of cytoskeletal tension, guiding cell growth. You will combine biomaterials engineering, cell experiments, and computational modelling.
Research Areas
- Rationally engineered hydrogels
- Osteogenesis and bone regeneration
- Mechanoregulation and mechanobiology
- Biomaterials and tissue engineering
- Computational modelling of cell-material interactions
