Project Overview
About the Position
TU Delft invites applications for a PhD position on natural building skins for heat resilience, part of the NWO-funded Nature 4 Homes research programme. As heatwaves intensify, Dutch and European housing needs envelope solutions that keep homes safe without relying entirely on mechanical cooling. The doctoral project designs and studies vegetation-based and circular-material building skins that provide shading, evaporative cooling and insulation, combining architecture, building physics and ecology in prototype development at the MATELab.
The position is a salaried four-year doctoral appointment under the Dutch CAO-NU collective agreement in the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment. The doctoral candidate will prototype facade systems, measure their thermal and hygric performance in field and lab settings, and evaluate durability, maintenance and ecological value. The project works closely with housing corporations, manufacturers and green-infrastructure partners to move solutions toward real buildings.
Candidate Profile
Applicants hold a master's degree in architecture, building technology, civil engineering or a related field, with an interest in climate-adaptive construction and nature-based solutions. Experience with prototyping, measurement campaigns or environmental simulation is an advantage. Applications are submitted through TU Delft's careers portal with a CV, transcripts, references and a motivation letter, including a portfolio where relevant.
