About the Studentship

The University of East Anglia (UEA) is a member of the South and East Network for Social Sciences (SENSS) Doctoral Training Partnership, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). SENSS offers fully-funded studentships for postgraduate researchers wanting to begin a PhD in October 2027.

Research Areas

SENSS funds innovative PhD projects across six interdisciplinary themes: Sustainability and Climate Change; Health, Well-being, and Social Care; Justice, Institutions, and Social Change; Digital Social Sciences; Resolving Uncertainty and Addressing Crises; and Advanced Methods for Social and Economic Research.

Funding

The studentship covers tuition fees fully and provides a tax-free stipend of £21,805 per year (2026/27 rate), plus access to additional funding for overseas fieldwork, language training, and research training. Awards last between 3.5 and 4.5 years depending on prior qualifications.

Academic Eligibility

Applicants should have a good undergraduate degree (typically a First or 2:1) in a relevant social science discipline. A master's degree is not mandatory. The studentship is open to both Home and International applicants, though the ESRC stipulates that only up to 30% of SENSS studentships can be awarded to International students.

Application Process

Applicants must first apply for a PhD place at UEA via the standard postgraduate research application portal. Funded doctoral training deadlines are in December/January. Self-funded applicants may apply throughout the year.
